Came across this while looking for a graphic for the last post. I think it deserves it's own (there's lots more good stuff over at Russell's Teapot).

I think this cartoon makes an interesting point, and it reminds me a bit of the Norwegian segment of the Sicko documentary. I didn't realize the number of atheists in Norway was that high.
I am a Christian in America and a bit unsettled about the direction our country is going. But I'm not too worried at present about the religious right. I think we are about to experience a fairly fierce swing to the left, maybe with a Clinton in office again.
I also think this country has many strengths, but greed is doing us in. We are cruising into a health care and insurance crisis in the next decade that will require, I think, a move to universal health care. That can't happen easily, though, with the stranglehold the insurance companies have on the nation.
Christianity, too, is going to have to change or possibly lose out to atheism. Christian credibility is low at present, and the church is becoming increasingly marginalized as it is in Europe.
Many Christians will think this is the "great apostasy" foretold by the apostle Paul. I don't really know. I am hoping the church discovers the rich treasure of love that should be its heart. And if that love is expressed in any way through government, we might find ourselves mimicking the atheist Norwegians in many ways.
We are really comparing, here, apples and oranges (capitalism and socialism). America is actually already a poorly run, semi-socialist country now. Even insurance is behaving in a very socialistic way, except that it is channeling its winnings into CEO pocketbooks. And it is turning its back on the poor. Never did the Bible or Jesus say that was a good thing.
Kudos to atheists who are trying to think rationally and coming up with good solutions. My own heritage is Swedish, and they all seem to be fairly happy up that way. I hear stories of a lot of alcoholism, but maybe that is more common in the colder climes.
